The Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots will face off in Super Bowl LIII, which is less than two weeks away. On Championship Sunday, both teams won overtime thrillers, and both had to win on the road. The Rams started the day with a 26-23 win over the Saints and the Patriots finished off the day with a 37-31 win over the Chiefs.
Super Bowl LIII will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, home of the Falcons. It’ll be the first Super Bowl hosted at the stadium, which opened in 2017. However, this will be the third Super Bowl played in Atlanta. Previously, the Cowboys topped the Bills in the Georgia Dome in Super Bowl XXVIII, played in 1994, while the Rams topped the Titans in 2000 in Super Bowl XXXIV.
Tony Romo is used to performing on the big stage, starting 127 NFL games for the Dallas Cowboys, but as he gears up for his first Super Bowl as an announcer, the CBS Sports broadcaster expects some butterflies.
“I’m anxious to see the feelings going into it because I’ve never broadcasted one, but I know how I felt going into the AFC Championship — that was such a big deal,” Romo said Wednesday on a CBS Sports conference call. “It’ll be ramped up even more than that.”
Romo’s uncanny ability to predict play calls has been lauded throughout his two years in the booth, but an enormous audience was introduced to it during the Patriots’ overtime win against the Chiefs on Sunday.
Broadcaster partner Jim Nantz chalks that up to just how detail-oriented a quarterback Romo was in his playing days.
“My partner had to have been — in his Cowboy days — some sort of sick film room guru — who took the time that was needed to completely solve the puzzle,” Nantz said.
“He and Tom Brady are seeing the same thing. People think Tony is a fortune teller, but this isn’t guess work and it isn’t guess work and it isn’t psychic ability.”
Tony Romo has gone viral for his ability to forecast plays during CBS NFL broadcasts, sparking everything from speculation of a return to the playing field to requests for MLB free agency predictions.
Asked several times during CBS Sports’ Super Bowl LIII conference call on Wednesday whether his critically acclaimed analysis has opened any doors for a job on NFL sidelines, Romo indicated that he’s just fine covering football from the booth. Will Tom Brady retire after the Super Bowl? Let’s look at all his recent quotes about retirement
“I’m really happy where I’m at,” the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback said. “I’m sure, at some point, 25 years from now, you’ll want to do something competitive in that regard … but I like where I’m at. I don’t think about that right now at all.”
Earlier in the call, Romo joked about a similar topic. When asked if he received any job offers following his broadcast of the AFC Championship Game alongside Jim Nantz, he was frank: “Yeah, just from CBS. They said I could work the Super Bowl.”As far as Super Bowl LII goes, Romo spent most of the call discussing his excitement to work with Nantz, Tracy Wolfson and Evan Washburn from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He also downplayed his heralded knack for identifying plays before they happen.
“The game is the story, and you’re just going to call it,” he said. “I’m really talking out loud. There’s no real big planned thing. There’s no plan of doing it. Once in a blue moon, you get lucky.”
